handwrist – The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste

As we celebrate Christmas on the Julian Calendar this day, I thought it nice to share with you an album I found from a Portuguese composer called handwrist, working in the medium of psychedelic, progressive and drone rock, perhaps with lo-fi touches, basing his compositions on the aforementioned Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, whom St. Basil the Great wrote about in the 4th Century.  Merry Christmas to one and all.

    Los Malinches – Planeta Náhuatl

I can’t seem to find much info on Los Malinches, an incredible psychedelic rock band out of Brazil, save their Facebook and Instagram accounts, but their latest album, Planeta Náhuatl, is phenomenal!  Fans of a Beatlesque style of garage rock, fuzz, and wild Latin American 60s music will be in heaven listening to this.

    Irmán – Für Eline

What a tribute from Irmán, a composer from Portugal.  From his Bandcamp website: “Für Eline is a love song, a testimony to my relationship with my wife. Since mid-2020 my wife has been a champion, guiding me and our house while I’m physically unable due to depression. This song is my gift to her.”

Albaluna are a project from Portugal whose stage performances blend together music, poetry and dance, combining cultures of the Silk Road into one well-woven tapestry.  The music is a mix of electronic progressive music, pure folk forms from the Mediterranean, North Africa and even hints of Chinese music.  They literally sound like they are able to vacuum a genre of music and easily mix it into their palette.  They…
