1414E08 vs The Last American Poet – Necronomicon

Harold Bertram, a sound designer out of Germany who works under the name 1414E08 collaborates with The Last American Poet, Shane Beck.  Shane’s calming voice and choice of subject matter, the infamous American horror-meister H. P. Lovecraft are expertly couched by Bertram’s horror-drone soundtrack.  Remarkable.

Bruce Licher – Tape Excavation (Special Expanded Edition)

Bruce Licher is an icon in the art-punk/post-punk/post-Industrial music scene.  He was a member if the seminal band Savage Republic, runs Independent Projects Records and Independent Projects Press for his graphic design work. Though we’re a bit early to the party, so to speak, Bruce will be reissuing an album called Tape Excavation, which has been supplemented with bonus material and will feature the gorgeous letterpress artwork he and the projects he works with are known for.  I am sure that this will sell out very quickly, so you’ve been warned – now is a good time to pre-order this…

    Awalom Gebremariam – Desdes

Awalom Gebremariam was a singer from Eritrea who completed this gem of a record in 2007 in the United States.  From his Bandcamp site: “Awalom completed Desdes in 2007, not long before he departed Eritrea. Because Awalom left after the recording he never received any money for cassette and CD sales. But he also didn’t get to find out how much of an impact the songs have had locally. His songs appear to focus on love, but Awalom isn’t speaking about romantic love per se. Love of country and pride in the struggle for independence are what helps makes songs…

    William Ryan Fritch – Polarity

Welcome to 2023!  We start the year by sharing a release due on January 13 by American composer William Ryan Fritch, who has been previously featured on the blog before.  From his label, Lost Tribe Sound’s Bandcamp site: “‘Polarity’ is the first in a three album series reflecting on the many calamitous water crises affecting life on this planet. Fifty percent of the sales for the three album series will be donated to communities that are at the front line of these crises, in perpetuity. Much of the sound of Polarity was inspired by experiments in “real world-ing” various synthesized…

Denny Zeitlin with George Marsh & Mel Graves – The Name Of This Terrain

American pianist and psychiatrist Denny Zeitlin has a body of work that is second to none, including winning several jazz awards and scoring films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but this album was hidden away at Zeitlin’s insistence, which is a shame, as it blends avant-jazz, funk, rock and some works that would feel comfortably familiar to fans of Frank Zappa.  It’s a weird, but rewarding, disc, and it’s such a treat to see that Zeitlin finally relented to its release.

    Thanatos – Christmas Moments

If you’re going to spend the winter holidays listening to Gothic Christmas music, you could do much worse than hearing Thanatos doings warm and rather respectable Christmas tunes. May you, my friends who are either Orthodox, Catholic or those who participate in one way or another in Advent, enjoy a pleasant time.

The Crossing – Carols after a Plague

I knew nothing about the band The Crossing, but after seeing that a composition by drummer Tyshawn Sorey was featured, I thought it prudent to listen to that track and then to the whole album.  It is, unsurprisingly, a gorgeous, if dissonant, listening experience. From The Crossing’s Bandcamp site: “Throughout its history, the Philadelphia based contemporary chamber choir The Crossing, led by conductor Donald Nally, has championed works that address social, political, and environmental issues. So it is consistent with the group’s history and mission that their latest release, Carols After a Plague, takes a broad view of our collective…

    Illusion of Safety & Z’ev – Illusion of Safety & Z’ev

This release, by No Part Of It Records, is a fine label putting out quality discs, and this archival album combines Dan Burke of Illusion of Safety and Z’ev, two of America’s foremost Industrial musicians. From the label’s Bandcamp site: “What we have here is a potent cocktail of scrap metal, processed field recordings, modular synthesis, and plenty of aptly placed intermittent percussive clatter. The overall impression I’m left with is a very calculated sound collage that still feels like the sonic equivalent of a deep epiphany, or maybe a catalyst for one. What seems like a casual interweaving of…
