On this tenth album by Turkish pianist (and frequent visitor to Japan) Selen Gülün, she remains in fine form. She’s no stranger to our blog, and it’s been far too long since we had the pleasure of hearing modern jazz done right. From her Bandcamp site:
“Selen Gülün’s tenth album, Years, marks a return to the song form she has long yearned for—one in which she breathes effortlessly. Recorded live on September 2-3 at Halil İbrahim Işık’s studio, Keyboard Istanbul, Years features Alper Yılmaz on electric bass and Derin Bayhan on drums. The album presents both vocal and instrumental songs arranged in a trio format, characterized by sophisticated yet easily accessible melodic phrases and uncomplicated harmonies.”
Uncomplicated, easy listening, and a joy to hear through and through. I only hope she makes her way to Beijing before my time is up here.
