It’s been years since I watched a relatively new music video. As someone old enough to remember when MTV first started (“Video Killed The Radio Star,” indeed…), I used to love the cheesiness of the early videos. Filmmakers, however, caught on to how great a new medium the music video could be, and old friends like Jeffrey Kinart and Doug Freel helped usher in the new format.
Fast-forward to 2026, when I had the absolute pleasure of meeting some amazing students at a winter camp in Bakuriani, Georgia. I do everything possible to steer the conversation toward interesting topics (music is always number one), and lo and behold, one of the most brilliant students pointed me to the Canadian band Mother Mother. As for the music, there are grooves here that reminded me of some of the best late 80s/early 90s music, and it left me thinking about some of the old videos I remember seeing during those years. The video, however, is rather cinematic. A drunken father, the ‘daddy’ in question, decides to kill off his daughter’s paramour in a rage. For what is essentially an indie pop music video, there is a lot of tension, some excellent jump cuts, and the final bang makes you feel for the target in question.
Heavy listening, heavy viewing. Well done.
