Some heavy progressive rock from Galicia, one of my paternal ancestral homelands:
“Makali (from the Bubi Makálé/Makòlé) was a drill born free in the jungles of Bioko, in Equatorial Guinea. He was captured by humans and sold to Galician sailors who took him to Meaño. There he lived with his owners, riding a Vespino, visiting taverns, and drinking barrantes, until he lost his mind due to life in captivity. He began to behave violently, stealing horses, eating cats, and attacking people, until he ended up locked in a cage, where he died.
This album tells his journey, a symbol of freedom and loss, and connects his story to experiences of migration, uprooting, and maladaptation. The work invites us to accompany him on a journey around the world through the authors’ own experiences, taking Makali across places where they themselves have felt a bit like “Makalis.””
