I stumbled across Sumner McKane on a Reddit post recently, and decided to give this album a listen. It’s a nice combination of instrumental AOR rock, post-rock, and prog tinged slightly with a few psychedelic elements hear and there. Easy listening.
Yoruba Singers – Fighting for Survival
It’s not often that we get to present to you a band from Guyana! From the Yoruba Singers’ Bandcamp site:
“Having remained continuously active since 1971, the Yoruba Singers are the longest-running musical group in Guyana. Emerging from a music scene mostly dominated by slick, commercial entertainment, the Yoruba Singers brought a new dimension to Guyana popular music, cooking up a potent stew of afrocentric vibes, steeped in a committed invocation of the country’s African heritage.
The group’s magnum opus is the 1981 album Fighting for Survival. The album sums up the group’s first decade of operation, serving up a heavy mix of calypso, jazzy funk, reggae and afrobeat.”
Shane Beck and mora-tau – Irrevocably Entwined
“The Last American Poet” Shane Beck collaborates with Japanese experimental composer mora-tau for an album of spoken-word-laden soundscapes.
The Black Flamingo – An-Nûr
This is perhaps the most remarkable psychedelic rock release of the past year. Up until a few days ago, I had no idea who The Black Flamingo were, and now, 5 or 6 plays later, they have me curious about their heavy back catalog.
The River Voices – Çorovodë, Albania | May 2017
From Remix-Culture‘s Bandcamp site:
“Recorded live in May of 2017 by Hatim Belyamani and Bajram “Kafu” Kinolli in Çorovodë, Albania.
We are a non-profit organization celebrating musical traditions in harmony with digital remix art.
Our mission is to inspire people to reconfigure their relationships with other cultures, communities, and individuals, through film and musical experiences, both live and virtual.
Otherwise we are lost.“
It seems like a noble effort by Remix-Culture. I look forward to hearing more from them.
Various Artists – sirr-ecords: Meteorologia
sirr-ecords is Portugal’s preeminent experimental music label, and this compilation covers some of the artists who work with them. Each of the artists provide a track based on weather, and the notes over at the album’s Bandcamp site are very much worth reading.
‘Jeffersons’ Star Sherman Hemsley Was A Huge Prog Rock Fan
tha
As it turns out, ‘Jeffersons‘ star Sherman Hemsley was one of my clients while I was working at Aron’s Records off and on during the 1990s. He was an absolute gentleman who always had a kind word, and he thoroughly impressed me with his progressive rock knowledge and the special orders he would give me to hunt down. My fellow buyers and floor staff told me that he was instrumental in bringing a lot of prog to Los Angeles (especially the legendary band Gong). This article I’m sharing came as a surprise that he and Yes singer Jon Anderson actually recorded an album together, but it has remained unreleased due to legal problems with Hemsley’s will.
Dead Kennedys – Viva Las Vegas
I’m still on the road, now visiting glorious Las Vegas, Nevada. Here are the Dead Kennedys tearing up an Elvis Presley classic.
Agnivolok + Necromishka – Animal God (Звериный бог)
Agnivolok and Necromishka are two Israeli neofolk bands who remind me not only of obvious modern bands like Death in June, but have a sound similar to the legendary American ur-neofolk band Changes. Stunning, mellow, folksy and dark.
Khan Jamal, Pierre Dørge, Johnny Dyani – Three (1985)
Today is a travel day, so I leave you with a collaboration between American vibist Khan Jamal, South African bassist Johnny Dyani and Danish guitarist Pierre Dørge.
