Kawabata Makoto is the leader of Acid Mother’s Temple, Japan’s greatest modern psychedelic rock group. He’s also a wildly experimental composer, with this album being influenced by musique concrète and drone as well as the usual psych one expects from him.
Psychedelic Rock
Misha Panfilov – Sierra (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Though the soundtrack to Sander Joon’s animated film Sierra won’t be officially available until August of 2022, Misha Panfilov has graciously shared several very mellow, almost vibraphone-inflected tracks he used to design the cartoon’s soundscape.
The Pink Elephant – Mellowing
Latvian band The Pink Elephant play a mellow psychedelic rock that has an authentic vibe to it. Not a bad neo-psych release at all.
TEKE::TEKE – Shirushi
TEKE::TEKE are a band out of Canada who combine a punk aesthetic with psychedelic music and Japanese soundtrack music from the 1960s. It’s about as unique a release as I’ve heard in some time.
Amancio D’Silva – Konkan Dance
A pleasant surprise comes from Australian record label The Round Table. Amancio D’Silva was a musician based out of India who mixed traditional music from his homeland with modal jazz, and the results are stunning. From the label’s Bandcamp site: “Also recorded in 1972 although not released at the time Continue Reading
Kikagaku Moyo/幾何学模様 – Kumoyo Island
Some very happy news today, as Japanese acid-folk-psych band Kikagaku Moyo have given us a fresh album. From their Bandcamp website: “In many ways ‘Kumoyo Island’ represents the culmination of a journey for Kikagaku Moyo. While their decade-long career can be summarized as a series of kaleidoscopic explorations through lands Continue Reading
Various Artists – Weedian: Trip To Germany
Though I’m not much of a metal guy, I have grown fond of things like desert rock, stoner rock, drone metal and other variants. The online label Weedian has been releasing free (or pay-what-you-like) compilations of bands in local scenes, and this one covers Germany in 62 tracks. Most of Continue Reading
Orphan Sound System – Tantric Tantrums
Experimental music isn’t a genre that avails itself to the power trio. In this case, however, Jeff Gburek, John El-Manahi and John Palumbo should be given such a venerable title. The music they produce as Orphan Sound System is reminiscent of vintage progressive rock bands like Faust or Cranioclast but with Continue Reading
Etran de L’Aïr – Agadez
Thanks to a bit of luck and our friends at Sahel Sounds, I was fortunate enough to obtain an album by Nigerien (no, not Nigerian) troupe and stars of the local wedding music scene, Etran de L’Aïr (or Stars of the Aïr region). From their Bandcamp site: “Recorded at home Continue Reading
Ty Segall – Lemons
Ty Segall is a garage-rock music phenomenon, and this album shows him at his beat-rock best, mixing garage, psychedelic rock and the aforementioned beat music this album oozes. Remarkably raw and impressive.
