“Maria Teriaeva is a Siberian-born, Paris-based musician and composer. She uses the Buchla modular synthesizer as a framework for her music combining it with acoustic instruments and voice,” so says her bio on Bandcamp. She has become quite a revelation to me, as her music is some of the must Continue Reading

Gûldur – Despair
Gûldur is part of a wonderful collective based in Porto Alegre, Brazil, a place I would like to visit before I rest my bones in this Earth. Some of the bands and labels associated with this scene produce consistently good experimental, noise, dungeon synth and other related genres, which brings Continue Reading
TRUTH – Truth: Eponymous Anonymous
TRUTH is a new project that starts in the realm of microsound and develops into an organic piece of musique-concrète. The pulses and bleeps remind me of the very early experiments of Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, as does the rather dark tone carried within the music. It is both are Continue Reading
The Orchestra Of Mirrored Reflections – Surfin’ Kali Yuga
This most certainly is not basic jazz. The Orchestra of Mirrored Reflections has been performing darkjazz for a long time, and at least to my ears, they encapsulate the genre. The beats, based on Indian rhythm, mesh well with the saxophone and atmospheric electronics underpinning the groove above.
Akira Kosemura – Rudy
No, nothing to do with yours truly, thankfully. My own biopic would be classified under surrealism/horror, I’m afraid. Instead, what you have here is what looks like an independent film about a girl who lives in Coventry, England. Should you click on the link, you’ll find more information on the Continue Reading
Claire Rousay – The Bloody Lady
As I wrap up my vacation in Los Angeles and prepare to head back home to Beijing, I thought I’d share the work of a Los Angeles-based composer who has intrigued me for a while now. Claire Rousay (stylized claire rousay) is a local composer who works in the electroacoustic Continue Reading
Christophe Bailleau – Insight and Vision
Before I get to the promotional blurb on the website for Mahorka Records, I can give my thoughts on the album. Christophe Bailleau’s Insight and Vision crosses so many genres that one would think, based on the description, that the music would be unlistenable. Nothing could be further from the Continue Reading
Hyldýpi – D V A L I
Hyldýpi is the project name for Icelandic composer Herbert Már Sigmundsson. The music is a gentle sort of ambient touched with New Age influences. Respect to Neotantra Records out of Italy for releasing this, as it’s a pleasant listen.
Lea Bertucci – Hold Music
Rather beautiful for drone, this one. Lea Bertucci is a composer based in New York and on this recording offered by Dinzu Artefacts (fellow Los Angelinos whom I hope are safe), she offers music that is meant to be infinite. From the label’s Bandcamp site: “Hold Music is a pair Continue Reading
Abul Mogard & Rafael Anton Irisarri – Live at Le Guess Who?
Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri, from Italy and Spain respectively, are two of the most outstanding ambient music composers going today. They collaborate here on a live work that sounds so atmospheric as to be nearly holy, especially since it was performed at a church in Utrecht.
