Soft Tempo Lounge Internet Radio

Soft Tempo Lounge offer the best of easy / cheesy / sleazy listening all in one program.  From the station’s website:

“Mentioning the first foray into content creation with the ‘UNCLE JERRY’S PAD’ channel, eventually transforming into SOFT TEMPO LOUNGE 13 years ago, is more perfunctory rather than illuminating. Likewise to hark back to the glorious parties and events we created in the 2010s is nice but seems of scant relevance to the here and now.

The real value is in its purpose – to entertain and encourage a more relaxed way to live in the present moment. The genuine audience experiences, be it an antidote to calm a busy mind, drifting off into nostalgic daydreams or effortlessly harmonising to universal vibrations, all depends on you.

Everything we do, every approach we take is with the utmost appreciation of the style, music and gestalt of the mid 20th Century. With great regard and respect for all those creators and protagonists who have enriched our world ‘lounge’ culture.”

Various Artists – Four Flies Records: Best of 2023

I don’t do year-end lists because of the absolute onslaught of releases I get to hear throughout the year can be overwhelming, but I like when those I admire do it for me.  The magnificent Four Flies Records have released a compilation of 15 easy-listening/soundtrack cuts that made a swinging impact.  I look forward to hearing much more from these guys!

Bruno Battisti D’Amario – Tastiere Oggi

Guitarist and soundtrack composer Bruno Battisti D’Amario was a major contributor and “first guitar” for the legendary Ennio Morricone, and with this album of library and lounge music, it highlights D’Amaro’s ability to mix funk, blues and even touches of psychedelic rock into a brilliant mix.  Truly incredible mood music.  Thanks to SONOR Music Editions for re-releasing this gem.

András Wahorn – The Wahorn Airport Live at the Contemporary Wahorn Club Vol. 1

wahorn · The Wahorn Airport live at the Contemporary Wahorn Club Vol. 1.

This is quite a peculiar album made by an old friend. András Wahorn had a storied history as the leader of one of Hungary’s most radical progressive rock bands, A.E. Bizottság, who released three albums of what they called disaster music.  He also released works for the now-defunct record label Tone Casualties which tended to drift towards more experimental and improvisational music mixed with electronics.

Wahorn isn’t making disastrous music these days.  In fact, he’s managed to pull an album together informed by easy listening, lounge (a very dark version of it) and one of my favorite modern genres, darkjazz.  The album grooves at a relaxed pace, and though there is a heavy, ominous vibe underpinning each track, it manages to remain an enjoyable collection of tracks.  My only complaint – I’d love to see this available on a platform like Bandcamp or on the better streaming services (like Deezer or Qobuz).  The ideas here are great, and I hope András continues to create music of this type for a while.

Arthur Lyman – Island Vibes

The ever-brilliant Aloha Got Soul Records is about to release a lost masterpiece of exotica.

Arthur Lyman played vibraphone and marimba, and with these tools, nature sounds and some fine musicians backing him up, he managed to conjure up images of life in the South Pacific and Hawaii, which had just become our 50th state in the United States.

This album was originally recorded on Broad Records in 1980, but it seems to have been forgotten, which is surprising given the explosion of exotica, easy listening and lounge music which occurred during the 1990s.

As of today (July 23, 2021), there are three tracks available for listening.  Each sound relaxing, and definitely in keeping with Lyman’s mellow sound.
