Brume + Mykel Boyd – Ectophilis

Mykel Boyd is one of the leading lights in experimental music and drone, and has done so much to promote the genre that it is (pleasantly) hard to keep track of his releases.  He is paired with Brume (the working name of French composer and long-time contact Christian Renou) who is, frankly, a legend in the cassette culture scene.  The album is a fine take on electroacoustic music with an ominous vibe floating throughout these pieces.  Perfect to get lost in thought with.

    Linnea Hjertén – Nio Systrar

From Linnea Hjertén’s Bandcamp site: “Born from the synthesis of Swedish folk melodies and ritual ambient, Linnea Hjertén’s debut album “Nio systrar” (‘Nine sisters’) is a wordless invocation of primordial energy – a psychoacoustic gateway to altered states of consciousness. Each of the nine tracks brings us deeper into the cycle of spiritual death and rebirth, stripping away the old to make way for the new. With a musical maturity far beyond her years, Hjertén channels the ethereal beauty of Dead Can Dance, the spellbinding chants of Kari Rueslåtten, and the minimalist Nordic atmosphere of Forndom. Mich Gerber – Shoreline

Thanks to one of my friends for turning me on to the works of Swiss bassist Mich Gerber.  From his Bandcamp site: “Instrumental album with Andi Pupato (perc, drums), inspired by music that has been played during the blue hour concerts along shorelines. Mich Gerber plays the double bass as a lead instrument, layering tracks over tracks.”

Steve Roach and Robert Rich – Waves of Now

From the legendary duo’s Bandcamp site: “We present this soulful 30 year reunion between two stalwarts of Ambient-Electronic music in its entirety, exactly as it occurred. Steve and Robert answered the urge for unification after a very long orbit and 40 year friendship, reuniting and engaging their collective creative process, fueled with decades of individual innovations, genre defining releases and worldwide concerts. Recorded live to a sold-out audience on December 5, 2023 at the Club Congress, Tucson Arizona. The set flowed through solo and duo passages, culminating in pieces from the classics Strata and Soma. The energy was electric throughout…

Rose McDowall – Our Twisted Love EP

It’s amazing to think that this EP is the latest (and hopefully not last) artifact released by former Strawberry Switchblade front-woman Rose McDowell.  She had been active singing with groups like Current 93 and her own project, Sorrow, for many years, and this EP continues on that dark and eerie road.  I get the feeling of hearing a very dark series of folk songs sung in the creepiest of Presbyterian churches.  Brilliant.

Jolanda Moletta – Full Moon Session

Jolanda Moletta is an Berlin-based experimental vocalist who used to sing for the group She Owl.  This album features her gently eerie, comforting vocals and not much else.  To add to such glorious tones would be a crime.  Her voice is delightful as is.
